Meet the Candidates!

Cece Chan, running for ASPLU President.

Name: Cece Chan
Pronouns: she/her
Year in School: Second year, class of 2023
Major(s) and Minor(s): Double major in Gender, Sexuality, and Race Studies and Communications

Get to know me:
I am an imperfect yet fearless leader. As a woman of color, feeling not enough, seen, or understood are stories close to my heart. In learning how to fully love and show up for myself, I’ve found a calling to do the same for those who’ve been made to feel unworthy for who they are. My passions include decolonizing and diversifying education, criminal justice, and healthcare systems. I believe relationships are at the center of all advocacy work.

Mission:
Imperfectly yet fearlessly loving and showing up for those who have been made to feel not enough.

Vision:
Unity through Community, Discussion over Destruction, Walk Humbly yet Love Loudly, Committed to Change

Values:
Justice and Compassion
Relationships and Collaboration
Diversity and Inclusion
Transparency and Accountability
Empathy and Storytelling
Joy and Wellbeing

Qualifications:
When we return to campus in the Fall, students will be seeking community with one another. This year I’ve had the amazing opportunity to share spaces with various student clubs and organizations across campus. My leadership is centered on community, collaboration, and relationship building. I’m excited to join forces with campus partners to ensure that students are welcomed back to campus with safety, joy, and celebration.

Name: Naomi Atnafu
Pronouns: she/her
Year in School: Second year, Class of 2023
Major(s) and Minor(s): Double major in Political Science and Global Studies and a minor in Business

Qualifications:

As a student who has been fortunate enough to be placed in many leadership positions, I can say that I have learned how to communicate effectively. And as broad as that statement seems, the nuance behind understanding how important it is to communicate genuinely with one another, is a big missing piece in a lot of spaces. From my previous experiences and interactions I have learned to: listen thoroughly, care wildly and act wisely.

Previous Work in Legislation: I co-sponsored Senate Bill 97, which sought to ban “gay panic” or “trans panic” defense — under which a defendant accused of committing a violent crime may use a victim’s sexual orientation or gender identity as a defense tactic.

At PLU:

  • Rieke Scholar, Diversity Center (current)
  • Tour Guide, Admissions Ambassador (current)
  • Stuen RHC Vice President (2019-2020)
  • Administrative Assistant, Risk Services Department (2019-2020)
  • TellALutes, Fundraising Caller (2019-2020)

Outside PLU:

  • Career Fellow, Leadership Enterprise for a Diverse America (current)
  • Management Leadership for Tomorrow, Career Prep Fellow (current)
  • Nevada Youth Legislator, Nevada State Legislature (2017-2019)

Get to know me: My passions include advocating for more intercultural communication and spaces for people of color on campus. I have a heart for marginalized identities and correcting the institutions that have worked so hard to make sure we stay on the sidelines. I think transparency is the key to real change and I am intended to enforce that, if I get the honor to serve as your next ASPLU VP.

Mission:
Imperfectly yet fearlessly loving and showing up for those who have been made to feel not enough.

Vison:
Unity through community, Discussion over destruction, Walk humbly yet love loudly, and Committed to change
